IPass Illinois
IPass, also known as I-PASS, is an electronic toll collection system used by the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. It was launched with the opening I-355 (Veterans Memorial Tollway), on November 18, 1993. Having an IPass makes it easier to pay for tolls and you get a toll discount with the IPass transponder. IPASS makes it easier to travel with because it is accepted by 19 states and more than 35 tolling agents. You can travel worry-free in all of these states as a member of E-ZPass IAG consortium.
The IPass transponder is the transponder that Illinois offers. In this blog, you will learn how much are IPass, how to purchase an I-PASS, to how to set up an IPass and activate it, and IPass pay by plate. This post also discusses the states that EZ-Pass is accepted in and answers many more questions you might have about the IPass. Think of this post as your ultimate and simple guide to the IPass that you can come back to if you ever have questions!

How much are I-PASS? How much is an iPass?
An iPass can be purchased online and at a tollway oasis for less than purchasing it in-person at Jewel, Road Rangers. If you are wondering about what your payment will be put to, know that $20 of your payment will be added to your balance to pay for tolls and the deposit for the device will be $10. Jewel and Road Ranger will add $2.90 to their profit/their effort of stocking the item in their location.

Differences between the three IPass transponders
Windshield-mounted transponders don’t work with electric cars like Teslas. Therefore, a license plate-mounted transponder is required for electric cars. Only 1% of cars have windshields that block transactions with windshield-mounted transponders. In addition, the following are vehicles that require IPass license plate transponders.

For large commercial vehicles, such as trucks, buses, coaches, RVs and trailers, the roof-mounted transponder will be recommended. If you own a large vehicle such as an 18-wheeler, you will need a new transponder. The roof mounted transponder and the roof mounted transponder look the same but the roof mounted transponder has an extra piece to it. Below is a picture of a windshield mounted IPass transponder:
However, if your vehicle is a regular one with 2 axles and 4 tires, you can still use a basic transponder. The vehicle classification will change if you drive a 3A axle bus, 3A axle truck, or an 18-wheeler with double trailers. To install a roof-mounted transponder, you must drill a hole in the roof.
Jewel-Osco IPass

How to set up iPass?
If you bought your I-Pass at a Jewel-Osco or Road Ranger, you will need to first activate I-Pass. If you bought your I-PASS transponder online at getipass.com, an Illinois tollway oasis or the Illinois Tollway Headquarters in Downers Grove, you don’t have to activate it because it will already be activated for you. There are a lot of ways to activate IPass but the primary way to set it up (activate it) is to call 800-824-7277 (which is their customer service number) and ask them to activate it for you. If you need more information on how to set up IPass, you can check out my post on how to activate IPass.
After activating IPass you have to mount your transponder on your car windshield if you have a windshield-mounted transponder. Here are instructions for how to mount your windshield mounted transponder:
Step 1: Make sure your windshield’s interior is clean, dry, and warm.
Step 2: With the arrows on the transponder pointed toward the roof align the transponder behind the rearview mirror at least 1 inch below the metal roofline, and 1 inch to either the right or left side of the mirror post.
Step 3: Take off the mounting strips’ plastic backing tape and press the transponder on the glass for fifteen seconds. You’re done!
This document contains more information about the above. It also explains if your windshield is made of metal, if it has a vertical windshield or if there are any heat reflective, solar tint, heat reflective, insulated, or compass/temperature indicators in your rear-view mirror.

Illinois tollway unpaid
There are two different types of unpaid tolls – regular unpaid tolls and violation notices. You can start paying an Illinois a violation notice on the violations page of Illinois tollway. On that page, click “Pay Violation” below and enter your plate number and violation number to pay your outstanding violations. Each violation notice from the Illinois Tollway and collection notice contains a violation number. You can view all notices that are associated with a license plate that has multiple violations by clicking on the violation number.
If you want to pay a regular unpaid toll you can pay online on getipass. Do know that if you already have a vehicle registered to a getipass account and you drive through an Illinois tollway without a transponder, as long as funds are available, the driver will not be considered in violation. However, if there are more than three incidents in a month of you driving through a tollway with a vehicle registered to your account but no transponder, the discount will not apply. Then each subsequent pass without a transponder will result in the cash fee being taken from the account.
To calculate your unpaid taxes to predict your charges, open the Trip Calculator and right-click on the map to see where your trip began (within Illinois), and where it ends (within Illinois). The calculator will then chart your route and identify your tax.

IPass for motorcycles
IPass windshield-mounted transponders do work in motorcycles. Motorcycles pay the same toll as all other two-axle vehicles on The Toll Roads.
IPass Pay By Plate
Customers without an IPASS Account or EZPass transponder can pay unpaid tolls through the Pay By Plate system. Do know that using an E-ZPass or I-PASS transponder is still the cheaper way to pay tolls. Pay By Plate, however, is built on the I-PASS payment system and it allows you to choose from a variety of payment options and avoids costly fines and fees. How the Pay By Plate system works is that when a vehicle goes through an Illinois tollway and does not have a transponder registered to that vehicle’s license plate, a picture is taken of that vehicle’s license plate and a toll fee is added to that license plate owner’s debt.
What are the options for Pay by Plate?
- You can enter your vehicle information and payment information in the Pay By Plate unpaid tolls system for up to 14 days to pay for an unpaid toll. This will ensure that you don’t pay any additional fees or fines. TIP: If you have already traveled, make sure that your plate information is up-to-date to reflect your travel date.
- Pay by Plate is a great option if you are in a rented or borrowed vehicle but do not have or want an E-ZPass or I-PASS transponder. You can simply enter your plate, payment, and travel dates within 14 days from the date of your first travel. Paying this one toll would be cheaper than buying an IPass transponder for $30.
- Managing multiple vehicles? Pay By Plate allows you to do this too. I-PASS is the best way to manage your vehicles. However, you can also add multiple vehicles and manage payment methods through the Pay By Plate system. You can also add an I-PASS transponder to a pay by plate account.
